Higher Education: Out of the Box

My husband went on a mission trip to Tanzania last spring and came back with pieces of ebony carved animals wrapped up in old newspapers.

While going through the beautiful pieces, I noticed an advertisement in the old paper:
“Gain UK degrees in Malaysia. Meet the University Representative at the Education Malaysia Kenya”

This is Daily Nation, a Kenyan English newspaper widely circulated in the eastern part of Africa.

For many years the only option to really excel in ones career or wellbeing in developing countries like Kenya or Malaysia was to pursue higher education in ‘western countries’. Countries like United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Australia and New Zealand.

But, why are they shifting their focus to Asia now?

Two years ago, I was exposed!

My ideals of the American Dream were challenged by Dani Johnson. She said, “98 percent of us are either dead broke or dead by the age of 65″.

Are you being exposed too? Your career is quite unstable? Is the piece of your pie getting smaller? Your home price is now lower than what you paid for? How about that children’s education fund? Is there one at all now?

Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus just published a very timely book called, “Higher Education: how colleges are wasting our money and failing our kids”. They said, our nation’s young deserve better than the overpriced and undernourished diet (education) they are being fed…it’s about how we view our obligations to our next generation.

So, what are some of our alternatives for higher education?
Do we think out of the box…?

There are seven reasons why study abroad is a great idea:
1. Getting out of the box. By getting out of the comfort zone we can find our own strengths and weaknesses, and we stretch our imagination.
2. Learn or improve a new language. If we are already learning a second language in school or college, why not master it at a faster pace at the native country. In today’s globalized economy, knowing a second language is an added advantage to job seekers or business professionals.
3. Meet new people, new cultures, try new food.
4. Get to see the world while getting an education.
5. Improve our resume because we have added value to ourselves.
6. Set ourselves apart from other job seekers for the same job because we demonstrate independence, exposure and experience outside of the norm. Employers are also looking for uniqueness and achievements that are different from the vast majority.
7. Network with people in different cultures. Imagine all those jobs that have been outsourced to the Philippines. Could there be something from us that they need in the Philippines?

The American psychologist, Rollo May said, the opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it is conformity. Do we exist and act like everyone else without knowing exactly why and what we are going for?

Sure, studying abroad is ‘scary’ to some. But which is scarier? Raising a generation that are no longer relevant to the coming economic shift or raising a generation that is armed and ready to take on the coming economic shift

There are a small group of young Americans who are already taking advantage of education overseas. My good friend, Dr Ah Hiok Sia is the Associate Vice President of INTI International University Malaysia. She said, there are about 2,500 international students in her university and some are young Americans who are pursuing summer programs. They gain credits toward their college degree at a cheaper price, get to experience the Malaysian life and travel around Asia.

My mother who speaks no English recently went to the American Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for a visitor’s visa interview. Instead of hoping to get an interpreter, she found herself speaking with a young American who is totally fluent in Mandarin.

This young American gentleman will not lack work when he plans to come back to the American soil. He is bilingual and well traveled and has work experience that is quite unique compared to the majority.

These are just some examples of the fruits of studying abroad.

The Best Internet Business

What Is The Best Internet Business?

There are several Web Host giants on the internet that provide private label rebranding to small business owners. This might be the best opportunity to “piggyback” on well-established businesses if you are just starting out in internet marketing. This gateway for unlimited wealth is made possible due to the growing demand of digital marketing in regions that are outside the scope of these large corporations.

In order to gain a share of the market, these corporate web companies offer reseller plans to small businesses which take their products and services, rebrand them and sell to business owners at a profit. These products include domain name services, web hosting, online storage, business productivity software, and tools.

There is quite an advantage in being a small business retailer because one is able to customize their business at the local level and meet the demands of their growing market on the World Wide Web. Let’s look at the definition of digital marketing to understand why the demand has grown significantly over the past decades.

What Is Digital Marketing

Digital Marketing involves all functions that are geared toward promoting online business activities. This includes but is not restricted to products and services in subcategories such as Domain Name registration, web hosting, email marketing, web design and development, software applications, sales and marketing, social media marketing and consultation, and all medium through which businesses and individuals advertise and market their products online.

Retail Marketing

Retail Marketing refers to activities geared toward end users of a web-based business solution such as domain names registration, web design services, software apps for business and personal use, social media management, web hosting and other activities that promote online communication.

As the need for business solutions intensifies, business persons become increasingly concerned about meeting the demands of the online industry, and therefore the Pros and Cons of the internet business become relevant.

The Cons of Digital Marketing

One would think that the more customers you have, is the more profits you are likely to acquire but the truth be told, the more the business will become more challenged due to competitors, need for online bandwidth, web creativity, uniqueness, and need for customer service due to increase in customer queries and the need for technical support.

The Pros of Digital Marketing

Fortunately, some web hosting reseller business plan come with independent customer service team that manages concerns and queries of clients on their behalf. Another positive thing about being a domain reseller is the handling of payments and processing of sales. As a web hosting reseller, you are given the opportunity to re-price your products to earn commissions from your own business.

Another pro for being a reseller is the fact that starting your digital marketing business does not require an exorbitant startup cost nor high overhead expenses to operate effectively, nor initial products, compared to other online ventures. Products are sold through the distributors but your private label is displayed discreetly in the sales operation and therefore your business receives the credit!

How Do I Become A Web Hosting Reseller?

There are two ways to become a Web Hosting Reseller and Domain Name Registrar. One can sign up as an affiliate or an actual reseller.

  • An affiliate gets a commission from advertising online products that the Web company (suppliers) market, using links and codes on approved websites.
  • Reseller uses their own brand to market the Web Company’s products (supplier) and services at a higher rate of returns. End users see the reseller’s products and services as their company’s brand and not the Web Company’s image.

Affiliates display the name of the wholesaler or provider (Web Company) through banner advertisements and other forms of internet marketing, similar to a franchising arrangement.

How Much Does It Cost To Run A Web Hosting and Domain Name Business?

It is very alarming to find out the actual cost of starting your own internet business. The subscription for a reseller license varies from $89-$499 annually and it depends on the provider or web company. Most persons prefer to do business with Web companies that offer a variety of affordable products and services. Once a business plan is purchased, one can start selling immediately online.

Some Web companies provide a retail storefront with the domain name search field. Other features include the following:

  • Dedicated customer service team support for your clients
  • Marketing software to assist in promoting their brand online. Resellers are expected to purchase their domain name to start promoting their retail internet business.

Start Up Cost

There is no mandatory startup cost for a Web Hosting Business, however, it is suggested to start with at least $300-$500. This would include the cost of the subscription plan, a domain name for your business idea, a web designer to customize the storefront (optional), business cards and other marketing paraphernalia to help provide greater access to your target market.

There is reseller’s support, community pages, manuals and online support to help you succeed in making your business profitable.

The process of starting an internet business is simple, and while there could be challenges in securing a viable market in your region, there are no geographical restrictions. Savvy business operators stand a greater chance to earn real attractive residual income annually, in a relatively short time.

What To Expect as a Web Hosting Reseller

Business owners are able to tap into the tremendous wealth of the digital marketing business industry as it is one that never sleeps! It has often been said that you can earn money while you sleep, and since the internet generates over a billion dollars per day, more and more persons have experienced this reality. Currently, there are Web Hosting Resellers who are making $10-30K (USD) per month.

Once you are patient, open to exploring online business opportunities, and enthusiastic about providing internet business solutions for individuals and companies, then you are ready to build your digital empire.

After reading this article, if you are asked: “what is the best internet business?” I am quite sure that you are in a better position to give a logical answer. However, you must realize that no matter how skilled one is, or how many customers he or she has garnered to do business with, real success comes through smart teamwork. The late Steve Jobs once quoted; “Great things in business are never done by one person, they are done by a team of people.”

Backpacking Around Ireland – Travel Tips for a Gap Year

Why not start your gap year off by discovering more about the British Isles. It may not strike you as an exotic location, compared with Thailand, but knowing more about the countries closer to home will help your future employment chances. Employers love to have intelligent, curious workers who have an interest in what makes their economy, and therefore business, tick. Ireland offers a wealth of landscape, industry, history and politics as well as music and entertainment too. Here are some great tips for travelling to, and around, Ireland on your gap year.

Flying into Ireland from the UK is easy. Aer Lingus, the national carrier of the Republic operates from nine airports in the UK and nine cities across Europe. Dublin, Cork and Shannon are all only an hour from the UK and Dublin is the main airport for the Republic of Ireland. There’s a frequent bus service from the airport to the city centre so transport to your accommodation should be easy. Flights from outside of Europe are frequent, although often involving one change at a continental European airport.

The alternative method of reaching Ireland from other European destinations is by sea ferry from the UK or France. If there are a few people travelling in a car or camper van, this can be a very economical way of getting there. The high speed ferry from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire (pronounced Dun Leary) takes only 90 minutes. Other ferry services run from Fishguard, Pembroke and Swansea in Wales. You can also travel from France to Rosslare or Cork.

If you are planning on travelling around Ireland, then a car is a good idea. The roads can be rough and difficult to navigate in rural areas. You drive on the left in Ireland. However, if you only want to stay in Dublin, owning a car can be more of a nuisance than it is worth.

The bus service in Ireland is good value for money and runs between all major destinations. Rail is another way of travelling around, and both rail and bus networks are run by CIE. At Dublin airport you can buy prepaid, advance and discount tickets from the CIE information desk. You can also pick up maps and information too. DART is the Dublin Area Rapid Transit transport network. It covers 25 railway stations in the county. Dublin Bus (Bus Atha Cliath) is an economical way of getting around the city. There is an airport link from the city centre every 20 minutes from early morning until 11pm. You can also buy advance tickets from Dublin Bus Head Office on Upper O’Connell Street. An alternative to public transport is using specialist backpacker tours. The best known of these is Paddywagon, but they all offer slightly different packages, depending on the kind of travel experience you are looking for.

Expect to pay between £10 – £20 for a room in a hostel or dorm, depending on when you go. If you are planning on staying in Dublin for a longer period of time, think about alternatives to hostels. Be aware that short term rented accommodation is not easy to come by, and keep an eye out on noticeboards at the university or in bookshops. The situation is particularly difficult at the start of the university term in September time. Hostels in Dublin in the summer are very busy, so you will need to prebook to be sure of having somewhere to stay when you arrive.
